I wouldn't say UYA really took itself
that seriously. I mean, Captain Qwark. That game was loaded with satire of action sci-fi and had a general comedic light-heartedness to it that I loved.
Also, I kinda jumped the Ratchet shift when Deadlock came out, and you're right in that the new games do try a bit too hard, but if we're just talking about the original trilogies I'd say Ratchet games took themselves a lot less seriously than the Jak games. This is all based on what I've actually played of Jak 2 and 3, though. And from what my friend (who is a PS2 platformer nut) has told me.
