I used to play tenor sax semi-professionally with a local group, just in small venues where everybody was drunk and didn't give a shit - just danced to ska music while they vomited on their own shoes. I currently make no income at all from music, but regardless, I am an amateur guitarist and pianist.
And I'd recommend that as a bass player, you listen to
Trevor Dunn. He's a competent electric bass player, and he also applies his technique to double-bass, on which he uses unusual extended techniques involving clothes pegs and serrated bows. If he doesn't make you want to explore your instrument to the nth degree, I don't know what will.
