I'm not sure if it's an Australian thing to use the words interchangably, or if I just have bad habits.

It's a British thing too: interpretation is entirely context sensitive. Actually, we almost exclusively say "series" when possible.
Not all that surprising since British and Australian cultures are much closer to each other than either is to American culture.
