We still don't know. I sure hope not, because that happened in PS3 and SONY got backfired real hard and they showed that tonight.

PS3 only backfired with PS2 games, and as a result they kept the PS2 in production for ages. Didn't they finally stop producing them just a couple of months ago? PSX games still worked fine for the most part. There were a few compatibility issues with some of the more obscure games I owned, but as a whole it was fine.
I'd much rather play a game on a console it was meant to be played on anyways, but no backwards compatibility can hurt the console.
