I think it's more of an issue with other aspects to the level rather than simply the .lvl file contents itself. Like how you won't be able to get Elum's sounds in there because of how the sounds work in the engine, you can't just slap the sound files from Scrabania in there and have them work, you'll mess up other parts of the game.
I'm no expert at this of course, and the only thing I can come up with is how Elum is actually handled within the game engine and that some part of his physics is missing within levels that weren't supposed to have him in.
I wouldn't expect an issue like this to exist in Abe's Exoddus though, since some versions of the game talk about a supposed level editor (RePLay copies expecially) and so it should handle that stuff for you if they count the possibility of the game changing.
