The word can be used to describe so much more than just a narrative format.
The problem with calling Anime a style is that it isn't. There are too many art styles that fit into the larger idea of anime. The only reason I object to people saying anime isn't a genre is that it seems like they are implying that it is an art form all its own, completely separated from animation that isn't anime, and that it owes nothing for its creation other than to itself. I think it's fair to consider it a genre with many sub genres, but too limiting to consider it a style.
