I had the DS version and it stole my life away for a few months. Are the various console versions very different from each other?

The original AC on GameCube (also on N64 but that was a JP exclusive) is very different to the DS and Wii one. It had various of different things you can do only on that game; it also had some exclusive events.
The Wii one however is pretty much a DS port only with a few extra things like the City being the big new thing and a couple of new events.
