Are the post-Year of the Dragon Spyro games really worth playing? I don't think I've ever heard praise about them, honestly. Always thought they looked kind of shit, too.

Here’s the rundown:
- Enter the Dragonfly: Suffers from launch-title-rushjob syndrome; had potential but let down by unpolished graphics, slow loading times, inconsistent framerates and that wonderful case of “new developer trying to copy the work of the previous developer without any heart”.
- A Hero’s Tail: Throws out a few of the series’ conventions (levels separated by portals, gems as a finite resource) and makes some stylistic changes (more cartoony/wacky art and writing style, no Stewart Copeland soundtrack), but comes out as a pretty solid platformer if you don’t follow the “they changed it now it sucks” mindset. Not as great as classic Spyro but playable and fun.
- Legend of Spyro series: Utter garbage that reboots the entire series, throws celebrity voices in everywhere and tries to make a super-serious “epic” story in the vein of Lord of the Rings. Gameplay is completely different from previous titles and is a very linear, beat-em-up affair. Avoid like the plague.
- Skylanders: Not a Spyro game, just features Spyro’s bloated corpse sometimes.
:
As far as I know everything except for Heroes Tail is garbage. I used to play these Spyro games for the GBA that had an isometric view and really bizarrely themed worlds. Like instead of a world implied to be Ireland it's just Leprechaun world and there are belted green hats everywhere. And I think the Ice World in one had clocks everywhere. They were simultaneously shitty and not reminiscent of spyro and but also kind of charming for how fun they could be. I think I might be the only person who played every single GBA spyro game to completion out of sheer boredom.

Season of Fire and
Season of Ice? Aw shit I forgot about those, I totally loved them. They were balls-hard because of the isometric view not really helping out with navigating platforms at all but they managed to be fun despite that. If you can find them going cheap they’re probably worth a shot.
I think they made a DS game or two as well? Never played those but I think one got a good reception, might need to track it down.
