It's about a young man trying to find hope and validation in a dreary, unambitious world. Much like a certain other film.
That would be the connection, yeah. But this is much more about that than Napoleon Dynamite was. What keeps confusing me about your description is that the boy isn't really all that interested in making the movie. He thinks it sounds cool at first, but quickly loses all interest in it after seeing how poor of a job the "director" is doing. The movie is much more about the boy's novel being stolen by a prominent writer who bastardizes, and effeminizes (not a word) the entire thing than it is about a kid trying to make a movie.
