Well, there's a few things that aren't evident in the sound itself that lend to the mystery.
For one, the sound is sped up/pitched up 16x it's recorded speed, otherwise it would be at too low a frequency for us to hear. So, if it were above water, it would be a basso bellowing that would make our eyes bleed and shatter buildings. Also, all these recordings are apparently super fucking loud considering how sound waves travel through water. Many of these sounds were picked up by microphones that were over 5,000 kilometers away.
What does all that mean? Only that whatever caused the sound would have to be incredibly massive, and that some of the sounds have been designated as possibly being organic in origin.
