With fuzzles hair density and number of teeth are two very slight but effective changes to make that add depth to the game. What similar changes could they make for muds without them being so obvious that one is mud type A and the next is type B?

Different hairstyles may work. Random scars and such might be effective, but I wouldn't want to be able to see even 5 muds with an identical scar in one game.
