So... server is full of murderous psychopaths. I don't know where all of the famous landmarks besides glowstone spawn are.

That sounds like the server I happened upon yesterday. I didn't add the port number after the IP address and ended up on a completely different server, where there was a floating spawn area made of glowstone and glass, and many people whom I didn't know and didn't speak their language.
