I agree, it is a strange situation in a way! Abe HD, I understand, is a one-off remake and there is no intention of remaking the other games in the series, aside from the HD ones. If you change the title completely therefore, so it bears no 'Abe's Oddysee' or even 'Oddworld', it kinda gives the impression it's the beginnings of a new or (dare I say it) rebooted franchise. It breaks any connection the remake has with the original and treats it as being separate. It just seems pointless to treat it as a separate game entirely, being a one-off, if there is no intention of continuing the remakes.
My understanding is that the remake will be canon, and that we should in a way be treating it as the definitive version of 'Abe's Oddysee'. To change the name completely seems like we would be saying Abe's Oddysee no longer exists in the game series. I don't see any reason to drop this title other than an attempt to modernise (read- shorten), but everyone is doing that these days and I would like Oddworld to keep it's classic titling convention.
I did also suggest 'The Oddworld Quintology: Part 1', which is essentially what AO is, but admittedly this would make more sense if there were plans to remake Munch too.
I remember someone asking a while ago if AE was to be remade also, and the reply from JAW was along the lines of 'if Abe HD does well, don't see why not'. If this were to happen, I take it AE HD would follow the naming formula established for Abe HD. If this is the case, a 'title:subtitle' name would be perfect for linking the two by changing the subtitle. Apologies for long post!
