...I spent about an hour on Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
I am not very good at this game. The plot, setting, characters and themes all sound great to me, and in principle the stealthier slower-paced gameplay has me interested, but I keep fucking up and getting mowed down and now I have almost no ammo left. On the first level after the intro.
Should I just turn the difficulty down to easy? I just don’t fancy going through the game savescumming and micro-managing my inventory.

I barely used my guns during my playthrough of DE:HR. You just need to stick to cover as much as you can when you're around enemies - that way, you can quickly move between conveniently placed crates and low walls. Look for vent covers, especially behind crates (and vending machines, if you can lift them). If you see an enemy separated from the rest, sneak up and knock him out or kill him (knocked out enemies can be revived by others, but hiding the body solves this problem).
Just be observant and patient in general. You don't need to confront enemies - you even get bonus XP for sneaking through areas without raising the alarm.
