It's more to do with being a reason for Lorne to have a whole species hold a single person in high regard. No need to play with elections or feudal systems when your leader is literally essential for your species's survival. It also serves as a mechanism to explain species-wide characteristics, for example, why all Sligs are cruel bullies and why all Glukkons are ruthless capitalists.
Plus, yeah, it means the affairs of the worker castes aren't doused in rubbish romance formulae.
