Really? I was going to go see it tonight, but then I saw the reviews. They were so bland that I figured I'd wait for the DVD release.

I think that people who review "kids'" movies are too used to reviewing them based on action set pieces, and villains. I didn't find it to be boring, or bland at all. If I had to compare it to something, I would say that it's the closest they've come to making a Studio Ghibli-esque movie. And no, not because of the sprites.
