I think most of the artists were suffering from neurological disorders such as schizophrenia (Hence the "art by phychotics" - it doesn't mean they're all mad-axe-murderers as some people think, it just means they have a mental illness), and schizophrenics sometimes see things differently to the way "normal" people do (related to the "hearing voices" symptoms).
