If the greatest technical painter in the world drew nothing but pictures of boobs, and cheese it wouldn't be great, or even good art. It may be a very well done painting, but that doesn't mean that it's "good". However, if someone whose style is somewhat sloppy in the technical sense, but they use that sloppiness to convey their heart breaking at seeing the world that they love being replaced with something cheap, and their hatred of their own inability to be effective in making the world a better place, if their paintings allow you to know yourself better than you had before viewing it because it's honest, it's sincere, and it's goddamn beautiful in it's ugliness, well, that's great art. And that's what Modest Mouse is.
