Depends on how you look at it. It's a one time investment into a piece of premium software with 24/7 support and a very active modding community. VB is targeted at large communities with hundreds, thousands or hundreds of thousands of members. With those numbers you usually earn back the $200 with ad revenue alone in a matter of weeks.
With Alcar's current license (I think) we can upgrade to any 3.x version but he'd need a new $200 license for 4.x. And since this is not the kind of place to put ads on (even though it would generate a fair income) that would be a big bite out of Alcar's wallet.
