I'm a bass player myself, I don't own one at the moment but I've been playing electric for near 6 years and have pretty much self-taught bass with either my friend's bass or my mom's friend, who usually lends me his. I like to play stuff like this:

Seinfeld theme is fun as hell to play, and it can get you used to slapping/popping techniques. It's not nearly as difficult as it might sound, either.
