The Wii U is a gamepad with a glorified tablet for a controller.

Xbox SmartGlass is a rather different beast.
I'm afraid that at no point in the conference did I ever have cause to see it than anything other than a Wii U ripoff, even if that's not necessarily true. I mean, Kinect is a far more flexible and interesting device than the wii ever was, but Microsoft never nearly utilized its potential (Or at least hadn't the last time I looked at what the kinect was capable of via youtube videos and what kinect games actually were). It was still treated by gamers as a Wii ripoff because though it was a pretty different beast altogether, that's what it basically inherently was. That article manages to sell it a little better, but I still can't see it as anything other than trend following. I'm not at all a techy, so this is a pretty naive view, take as you will.

And that there that I mentioned above was the main problem with Microsoft's conference: The presentation was awful. The speakers were listless. The flow was bad. It was terribly terrible boring.

The crazy celebrity cameos didn't help. Even Usher and five minutes of Nike blatantly advertising shoes at the middle of a gaming conference (What the fuck Nike?! What the fuck Microsoft?!) or the Microsoft presenter being paid off to advertise Prometheus couldn't make it any more memorable.

Sony really didn't have much better substance than Microsoft's presentation, but they had much better style. The presenters were engaging and the general music and peripheral bits seemed far more like they were going through the motions rather than filling up space like Microsoft was.

And when five minutes of your conference consists of an Usher concert, how are you not filling up space?
