That just leads to the question of why they ever stop following you.
Gameplay mechanic. Or somehow imply that they're programmed to guard a particular area. Or use MMs suggestion of having orbs static and drones mobile, then add doors or other obstacles that the larger drones can't fly past to follow Abe.
