I can't tell from that picture, but that's another thing about game renders that poses an issue; the way the light bounces off of them. Even in HD games, the characters tend to look waxy. There's a reason for this that was explained to me recently, and I forgot it.
I think it makes more sense if the in-game model was used for the pause menu, but it seems out of place for the main menu.
