AE would have been next to impossible without some form of quicksave though. If you look at the puzzles, some of them are much, much harder than AO's - On the first playthrough, quicksave gave me the right balance between frustratingly hard and too easy to be challenging.

Of course now that I know how to do all the puzzles, quicksave makes the game too easy - But that doesn't matter. However maybe in a re-make, there should be an option to turn off quicksave and have AO's style of saving instead, as some form of challenge mode?

I will agree that the hidden areas shouldn't have been marked.
