How exactly does being a fan of the book make it better?

Because I'm viewing it as an adaptation rather than as an original work? The plot and characters are the same in the books, but there's lots of introspective details the series by definition can't show, while conversely there's scenes that just work
better in visual media. I'm enjoying seeing the series from a new angle. Ambiguous characters that I had my own Ideas on are shown very different visually etc.
I've done this before with books to films, or games/manga to anime. I see the visual media from the perspective of someone who has already read the source material. An adaptation doesn't have to be the same to be a good adaptation, hell I would argue that a perfect replica, or 'safe', adaptation is actually far worse by definition than one that takes risks with the source material.
So I guess for me, the series would essentially count as 'fanservice'. That doesn't mean I'm necessarily a fan of midget fucking though.
