The game has to have code in place to render it; I can't think of a reason to not have 3D, although I've not really examined that side of the engine enough to say either way.

will there be any new puzzles or areas? Or are you sticking 100% to the original?

There will be new secret areas, and many of the puzzles will need to be tweaked, with perhaps a few being replaced.
There will also be a certain amount of new content that isn't in the original that are only accessible in new game + or other such things, meaning that you have the experience of the full game before anything is seen to be too different.
For the most part we're looking to do a remake as much as possible because that's the name of the game with this project; make a brilliant game look as good as it should without putting too much or our own stamp on it, because quite frankly, that's not our place; we're not here to fuck around with your memories.
