The whole of the underground part was a challenge because it took me ages to find the white walls.

That's precisely what made them so bad. All you needed to do was search for the one, single white wall and shoot your portal at it. Puzzle solved. And within the test chambers, there were generally a few more white walls, but only one would have a blinking neon sign declaring "ME! ME! SHOOT A PORTAL AT ME!"
