The Laura thing is simple; Silent Hill 2 shows the darkness in the human psyche AKA: Guilt. This formed itself as the various monsters Jame's fought (Heavily sexualized female creatures showing his repressed guilt and sexual urges), the bullies Eddie was surrounded by and the horrible father figures and God knows what the fuck else Angela saw. Laura didn't see anything because she was A, a child therefore innocent and B, not a murderer unlike the other three.
The Mary/Maria thing is really complicated and wholly dependent on the ending you get. I advise playing again and going for the main ending you didn't get last time.
As for Silent Hill 4... I didn't hate it. That's the most I can say for it.
