It's been that way since around season 10.

Really? Some of the better episodes have been after the 10th season. Medicinal Fried Chicken, Butters' Bottom Bitch, the 200th & the 201st episodes, the Coon saga. Doesn't sound that bland or forgettable to me. I'm not saying that the earlier episodes are worse or bad though, my favourite season is 6 anyways.
