I've been meaning to get into fighters for ages now. I picked up Blazblue: Calamity Trigger whenever that was released and I really liked the fighting. I've played a casual bit of MK in the past and I simply adored the variety in the characters. I want to pick up the sequel, but I've been waiting for the price to drop. Now I'm not sure if I should buy that or SF:IV. Opinions?
Only get SFIV if you have some people to play with and are willing to spent a lot of hours learning the characters/playstyles. If you're patient enough and spent a lot of time playing, it'll definitely pay off when you're able to kick all your friend's asses.

You don't even need to play online; I've never played SFIV but have spent many, many hours on it, either in training, arcade, trial or versus with friends.

Marvel vs Capcom isn't the best entrance into fighting games because it's not exactly orthodox. Don't get me wrong, the game is fantastic, but if you want a game to get into the fighting genre in general, you can't get much better than Street Fighter IV.
