That lasting appeal is slapped sideways when all of your momentum and fluidity means nothing when the levels are built to bring you to a full stop repeatedly, often by smashing an enemy into you, for no reason other than they rarely actually built those levels to be any fun at all.
You mean a game which rewards building up momentum and playing well has obstacles which punish not paying attention and just blindly running forward?!
