I call people retarded a lot, because there isn't an inherent relation to a disability as such any more, rather it's just a way of saying, 'mate, you're fucking stupid.'

I disagree. I always considered it an abbreviated way of saying "What you just said/did was so stupid only someone with a mental disability would have said/done it; You must be mentally disabled."
