I know they're mountain biomes. what's why I was crediting the post-1.8 terrain generator. Snow wasn't gone for very long, rain forests were never removed and what the hell do you mean by ferns?

1. In 1.8 and future versions of Minecraft, terrain features like the one you just posted aren't special anymore. You can find stuff like that in most maps now.
2. They've been missing in beta 1.8 and have been re-added partially in 1.0. In 1.1, they completely re-added them. I guess it wasn't very long.
3. Do you see rain forests here?

4. There's three kinds of tall grass. The triangular one is called a Fern or Living Shrub.
