It's always possible that it was a one off, but it wasn't flickering or anything. The cliff was just gone, and you could see the map, and the void beyond the map through it.

Worrying. Do you have a save in that area that you could check again? It may be a problem with the proxy geometry, a problem which as far as I know had been fixed a long time ago.
