I think that many people who play Minecraft today first saw it on Youtube, be it with the Yogscast or some other Minecraft series (I heard of it because of that Xcave dude). Minecraft on their own, without any help from Youtube, wouldn't have half the amount of players.

For me, the X Cave videos pretty much introduced me to it. Then I started watching the paulsoaresjr videos such as Man VS Minecraft (you should check it out if you haven't already) and Minecraft Dad. I think it's a mutual thing. Minecraft became popular partly because of youtube but also word of mouth and screenshots.
For anyone who'd like to check out some texture packs, I recommend DokuCraft and the DefScape high definition packs which are really cool and work with 1.0.0! The DefScape pack supports random monster patch (so you can have cows/creepers/pigs that have different skins!)
