When I log on my computer, I want to be greeted by something beautiful. Not a load of ugly icons. It's just as easy to pin shortcuts to your start menu (One more click, how horrible!) or with the advent of Windows 7, to your bottom bar.

I also try to keep my icons as tidy as I can and, if possible, symmetrical. I'd have thought you as a mac fan would understand the importance of presentation over core efficiency here.
I just stuck to desktop icons when using Windows 7, it really didn't bother me seeing icons all over my wallpaper, I just don't use them anymore on Mac since I have the dock. Only icons on my desktop are the hard drive and whatever external items and CD's/DVD's are plugged in.
