I myself generally prefer shoujo (very specifically mahou shoujo) and seinen. The only shonen I've ever liked is Death Note, Gurren Lagann, G Gundam and the One Piece manga when Oda isn't attempting to be a social commentator with the subtlety of a chiseled anvil.
If you think all modern shonen is bad, by the way, I suggest you give Gintama a try. You can see if it's your kind of thing or not through a
quick look-see on TVTropes and all the episodes should be freely available to watch on that Crunchyroll site. Which I wouldn't know about because I have two and a half hdds full of stolen animation from glorious nippon.
