I've always enjoyed the campaign in Call of Duty (since MW1 anyway, haven't played CoD before that) because they aren't trying to make it some sort of military simulator. The guns have hardly any recoil, the characters are all super human soldiers who can drive any vehicle, use any weapon and survive 3 tank rounds to the face. And at the same time the game gives you the freedom to clear the way however you like. You can go head on or flank your enemies. But it's still a game and the makers treat it as such, which is good.

Not sure why you would enjoy it for the first part part of your paragraph, since it tries to take itself seriously while doing all those things, but the second part is incorrect. Almost every Call of Duty level I have played is nothing more than a hallway, they are some of the least open ended games I have ever played. There are some levels where all you do is follow the leader even.
