I always used to let my friends be player 1, though it wouldn't be long before it was my turn, and then they would wait forever.

I know, I guess that's one of the annoying parts about 2 player. I barely die in the games, so it's best not to play 2 players with someone who's very experienced.
2 player works very well when you got 2 people who have no clue what their doing, but wanna take turns trying to solve the puzzles. That way the controller gets passed about every 2 minutes or so and the fun never stops.
