You might be right in that respect, but I feel like the community factor that I loved about this game practically disappeared with cross-server dungeons and battlegrounds. I may have my nostalgia goggles strapped on pretty damn hard, but I just miss the old community.

Yeah - The wider WoW community is like that. Back when you relied on people from your own server to do stuff with, your reputation with other players was important. You get more arseholes now in random cross server PuGs, because people know the likelihood of meeting the same player twice is pretty slim.
However, if you get on well enough with people from your own server and join the right guilds, organise PuGs in trade chat instead of using the dungeon finder, you can still get a good community factor and gradually get to know players from your own server and gain a reputation with them. It takes a while, sure, but it's worth it.
