I would like to say that achievements don't take anything away from the gameplay, in my opinion, it's the exact opposite, it adds to the game.

Agreed. I've never felt achievements cheapen the game, and I've never played a game
just for the achievements either. The extent of my reaction to earning a trophy is "Oh, well look at that..." and then I get back to playing the actual game.
