Even so, considering how short the turning sound is, I doubt the file size was very big at all. So, it would be silly to do it that way because of the file size.

Every file on a storage device has metadata, regardless of its size. The more files, the larger the total metadata will be. More importantly, it takes time to access and open a file. It's much more efficient to have one file constantly open and simply scroll bavkwards and forwards within it.
