Dumb.
Apparently the film will be in 3D, and will be the first film to be shot with a new kind of camera that films at 48 FPS instead of the traditional 24.
The film is in two parts, the second was originally composed to be a bridge film between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. I think this idea was kind of shitty, especially if it means essentially just making shit up to fill a gap. I'm glad they scrapped it. It probably would have been necessary, in order to create a transitional compromise between Del Toro and Jackson's differing styles. Now that PJ is doing the whole thing, they can keep it pure.
