Yes, they want the right thing, but go the complete wrong way about it. So now people assume those who support animal rights are clinically insane.
I don't think PETA has besmirched the name of all animal rights groups, just their own. The other groups make a point to distance themselves as much as possible from PETA.
My mom actually knows Ingrid Newkirk, their president, and lives near the PETA headquarters. I've never met her myself, but I've heard she actually encourages the militia-like behavior of the members under a sort of "fight fire with fire" pretense. Insanity just begets more insanity, in my opinion. PETA's done some good, but it's undermined by such stunts as printing their magazine covers featuring ideological celebrities wearing suits of bacon and shit.
