There's a line between caring too much and dogmatism.
My mother cared too much when she tried to subtley suggest I've always wanted children and wouldn't be so happy gay.
His parents are outwardly dogmatic and prejudiced against him for what he is. It's in part motivated by care and fear, but considering the threats and the actions they've taken there's a lot of disgust there too.
I personally couldn't care less what gender he ends up being, as long as it's something he's comfortable with.
