The best way of explosion-proofing your base is to not let creepers explode near it at all - Have a properly fenced-off, well-illuminated entrance and be vigilant. Don't wander around at night, and build your base in an open area away from caves and dense, dark forests.

2. What use is there for netherrack?

It's pink and ugly. You can light fires on it and they will never go out.

Also, are you crafting them correctly?

After 1.6, compasses seem to point somewhere near your original spawn, not at your bed spawn.

5. If you have a bow and arrow, do you constantly need to make more arrows?

Yes.
Skeletons also drop arrows when they die, try running around the world after daybreak to collect them off of fallen mobs.

6. How do you fire arrows?

Select a bow as your tool, have arrows anywhere in your inventory, then right click to fire them.
