I wonder why there are so many corrupted politicians in power. Is it really power that corrupts them, or does the branch just attract the bad types?

Ask yourself why people would want the job of president or prime minister. Very very few would give an honest answer of 'To do my job and govern and protect people as best I can'.
Plato said it best in the Republic where he theorized you could kill corruption dead by making sure the people with the most power were slightly less off than the average citizen, so no corruption comes of it.
There's about five bazilion problems with that, but still.
