It's very possible to keep large cats as pets if you so desired, and apparently most species of large cat would have exactly the same temperament as normal domestic cats.
And many people do keep them (Warning: slightly disturbing). One of the main differences though is that when a domestic cat decides to take a swing at you (and anyone who's owned a cat knows how often they love to do that), it probably isn't likely to be fatal.
