I would like perhaps two children to carry on my (rather horrible) name and (equally horrible) DNA.

Isn't it ironic that we're culling other species (such as deer) to "keep their numbers to a manageable size for the benefit of nature", but we're not stopping reproducing ourselves despite how much damage we're doing? One of the main reasons we're having so many problems in this day and age is simple - There are too many humans and the environment cannot cope with it.
I'm not suggesting we kill everyone, that would be stupid. But we could do with not reproducing for a couple of generations - But like that's going to happen. I don't want to produce my own kids for the simple reason of not wanting to contribute to this problem - Every little helps. I'd rather adopt some poor parent-less sod instead who already exists if I really felt the urge to raise a child of my own.

Assuming a couple only has two children they can hardly be blamed for overpopulating. To sustain a population on average people should be having 2.33 children (two to replace their parents and the rest to make up for the sex ratio and people who die before fertility). Although as we are approaching seven billion sustaining a population isn't enough we need to cut. And considering there are people in third world countries who are on average having 7 children cutting back wont be easy.
Oh and it would be rather selfish to adopt when you are fully capable of reproducing. These days orphanages aren't overflowing with unwanted children; there are more people wanting to adopt than children up for adoption.
