Anyone who seriously tries to cobble together a conspiracy theory based on the Turret Opera is losing some of my respect. It was a one-off joke, nothing more.

I thought that at first too, but it seems like a really strange situation to refer to as a "joke."
And I think referring to fan speculation as "cobbling together conspiracy theories" is a harsh and ignorant way to put it. The developers spent a lot of time putting secret crap all over this game.
Several new Ratman lairs and his graffiti (not to mention the whole tie-in comic), the entire backstory involving Aperture and Cave Johnson, not to mention GlaDOS's realization that she's Caroline, even the seemingly prophetic redeemable Turret who parrots some of Cave's lines from later in the game, as well as gives a metaphor about Prometheus that hints at the situation you later find GlaDOS in. These weren't coincidences, someone wrote these ideas down and they were fleshed out and peppered into the game. The people behind this game allowed the player to uncover more about the game and speculate based on what they find, but those layers connected to very logical conclusions, some are just less fleshed out or definitive than others. However, in spite of your assertion, ANYTHING can be a clue, and I think a lot of the speculation is on the right track.
I can't stand people who call others out for making "conspiracy theories" about a storyline that a great team of people put together. It degrades the product and the people behind it. This may come across as light-hearted dark comedy, but anyone who writes science fiction storylines will tell you that you're building an entire universe from the ground up. No small task, and these guys did a very thorough job of trying to define the world and situations without being heavy-handed about it, which often involves obscuring things that people will have to find later.
